Arizona’s ACA Premiums Jumped Nearly 28%. Neither Side Has a Fix.
Arizona ACA premium increases 2027 are the story of this open enrollment. Open enrollment started November 1, and the renewal letters people are opening this year are hard to believe. Arizona’s average marketplace premium went from $688 to $880 a month — up 27.9%, the highest increase in the country. Some carriers went up more than 30%.
This isn’t hitting just one group. It hits families buying on their own. It hits employees whose companies dropped group coverage years ago because that got too expensive, and sent everyone to the marketplace instead. And it hits the employers themselves, who are watching their own group rates climb and wondering what they’re supposed to do for their people. Nobody is escaping the math this year.
I’m not here to wave a flag for either party, because frankly, neither side has produced anything that works. One side’s answer has been bigger subsidies. Subsidies lower what some people pay each month, but the full price underneath kept climbing — and the minute the extra help shrank, the sticker shock landed on families all at once. The other side’s answer has been cheaper, stripped-down plans. Those lower the premium, but they leave people exposed when something serious happens, and they don’t do anything about the cost of care either.
Both approaches argue about who pays the premium. Nobody is fixing the cost underneath it.
We all know what doesn’t work for the majority of people. An $880 premium attached to a deductible you can’t afford isn’t coverage — it’s a bill you pay every month for protection you can’t afford to use. Deductibles went up again this year too, and most marketplace plans are HMOs with narrow networks. People are paying more and getting less, and they know it.
Arizona ACA premium increases 2027: your options
So what can you actually do? A few things:
- Don’t auto-renew. The plan that made sense last year may be the worst value on the shelf this year. Carriers didn’t all go up the same — one Arizona carrier raised rates only about 3% while others jumped over 30%.
- If you get little or no subsidy and you’re reasonably healthy, ask about plans outside the marketplace. Private PPO plans exist that can cost less and let you go to the doctors you want.
- If you’re an employer who dropped coverage or is dreading your renewal, it’s worth a conversation about what’s available before you just accept the increase.
- The deadline for a January 1 start on a marketplace plan is December 15, so don’t sit on the renewal letter.
I’ve been doing this since 1999, and I’ll tell you straight: there’s no magic fix coming from Washington this year. But there are still choices, and the worst choice is paying the increase without ever looking.
